Director Janet Hope, set up the Victorian Bariatric Interest Group out of concern for poor care of the bariatric (overweight, obese and morbidly obese) patient.   The group's aims are to raise awareness of the complexity of safe and dignified management of the bariatric patient.

The VicBIG objectives are to safely and effectively manage the bariatric (overweight, obese and morbidly obese) patient by:

  1. raising the awareness of the safe planning for admission

  2. simplifying the process by which hospitals acquire suitable equipment

  3. raising the awareness of the facilities available for transport to health care facilities

  4. promoting the development of suitable hospital facilities

  5. asking VicBIG members for help in challenging situations

Need to weigh your patient but you have no scales?

We have a solution
Two companies, Wedderburn and AIShealthcare, have offered the service where they will bring the most suitable scales to you, to weigh your patient in their home. They do need to know who will pay for the service and this may take some time to organise.

What information will they need?
You give the approx weight and height along with a sitting or lying width measurement and their mobility limitations.
They may also need door widths and access information e.g. steep drive / stairs etc..
AIS or Wedderburn then select the best scale
Deliver to patient where the staff members weigh the patient
(AIS or Wedderburn are not to be used to help manoeuvre the patient)
Please note:
You must organise for the appropriate staff members and or aids, to assist the patient as

AIS and Wedderburn are not to be used to help manoeuvre the patient.
